Follow

Last Updated: March 2026

Intended Audience: School staff (e.g. Ops) who maintain their school's Fujitsu scanner(s)

Context: After heavy use, your scanner may need to be cleaned. Otherwise, your scanned student work may include unwanted markings, such as the image below:

Example of image with yellow, blue, and pink vertical streaks

Due to: debris (staples, bits of paper) stuck inside the scanner & blocking the camera lens

How to clean:

Repeat the steps below for each of your scanners

1: Clean the outside of the scanner

If the outside of the scanner needs to be cleaned, use the F1 cleaning spray from the cleaning kit. Spray it onto a clean and lint free paper towel (or use the small cleaning cloths from the kit) and gently wipe the scanner surface. The scanner's Chuter Unit can be unclipped from the back of the scanner for easier cleaning.

Do not use compressed air, AKA electronic duster spray

Do not use any other cleaning spray

2. Open the scanner

Above the screen, locate and push forward the lever.

Gently open the scanner all the way forward.

Caution: When the ADF is open, it might accidentally close. Be careful not to get your fingers caught.

If your scanner is powered on, you will see "ADF open" appear on the screen. This can be disregarded.

3. Remove any debris

Do not use compressed air, AKA electronic duster spray

Do not use your fingers, as oils or fingerprints may get on the glass camera lens

Caution: Avoid damaging the sensors underneath the wheels (#1 in the image below)

Sensors located inside the scanner:

Next, take out the cotton swabs from the cleaning kit:

Gently examine the inside of the scanner and use the cotton swab to remove any bits of paper, eraser, staples, etc. that may be sitting inside the scanner.

4. Clean the inside of the scanner using the cleaning cloth:

Context: This step cleans the important parts inside the scanner such as, the glass, the different wheels aka rollers, and the sensors to remove any debris.

If the inside of the scanner is dirty:

  • Use the kit's F1 cleaning spray and a small cleaning cloth from the kit (or, a lint free paper towel). Lightly dampen the cleaning cloth with the cleaning spray.
  • Gently wipe the inside scanner surfaces
    • If written instructions are needed, read this guide (beginning on page 7)
  • For hard to reach areas, lightly moistened the kit's cotton swabs using the F1 cleaning spray.
  • Additionally, the gray ADF plate can be gently lifted if debris is stuck behind the panel.

5. Clean the scanner wheels using the cleaning paper:

Context: This step uses a large cleaning paper with cleaning spray to clean the inside of the scanner by "scanning" the cleaning paper.

Best use: when image shows thick grey streaks due to wheel marks

  • Take out a cleaning paper sheet and the F1 cleaning spray from the scanner kit.
  • Lightly spray the front and back of the cleaning paper with the spray. It may take a long time to dry if an excessive amount of Cleaner F1 is used. Use only a small amount.
  • Load the Cleaning Paper in the Chuter Unit (aka feeder).
    • Adjust the extension height as needed.
  • Adjust the side guides to the width of the Cleaning Paper. Move the side guides so that there is no space between the side guides and the Cleaning Paper. Otherwise, the Cleaning Paper may be fed skewed.

  • On the touch screen, press the Start button on the Cleaning Paper screen.

  • The Cleaning Paper will be pulled into the scanner (sometimes makes a squeaky noise as it's processed) and ejected out.
  • Repeat at least 4 times.
    • Spray the cleaning paper as needed.
    • Use a new cleaning paper sheet if the first sheet becomes too dirty.
  • Run the Cleaning Paper until it comes out clean (no visible lines or wheel marks left on cleaning paper).

6. Reattach parts and run a scanner test:

Important: After cleaning, confirm that all pieces are properly reattached and closed. Otherwise, paper jams or other feeding errors may occur.

Next, refer to the Scan Test article to verify that scans now appear without any wheel markings.
